Artist Statement

I work intuitively in my art and find that I am drawn to many mediums. With each medium, I explore in a different manner and with a different process – that interstitial space between idea and object. I am fascinated by process, especially those that include elements of chance and the unknown. In the unknown I lose the analytical aspects of myself and learn to accept and make peace with the accidental, unplanned, and the serendipitous.

In photography I either use the auto-focus feature or attempt to focus manually, risking that either means will capture the image I desire. In printmaking, I use intaglio techniques because the outcome of the acid etching process remains uncertain until I make a print from the plate. Even in drawing I take a chance on whether or not I am having a good drawing day.

My artworks in portraiture embrace self-portrait works, portraits without faces, and figural abstractions. Portraits uncover the hidden, revealing the masked or unknown aspects of self. In art, the unknown sustains me. Through the process of transforming materials, I transform myself. In working with these processes, I separate from my analytical self to be with the unknown and to revel in those undetermined outcomes.
